How nervous system stress shows up in animals before we’re aware of it

Many people notice their pet becoming restless, clingy, withdrawn, or reactive — even when nothing obvious seems wrong.
Often the assumption is that the animal is “sensitive,” anxious by nature, or reacting to something external.
But in many cases, what your pet is responding to isn’t an event — it’s your internal state, especially stress you may not consciously feel.
Pets Respond to Nervous System States, Not Thoughts
Animals don’t track our stories, plans, or explanations. They respond to physiology.
When your nervous system is under stress — even low-grade, long-term stress — it changes:
breathing patterns
muscle tension
tone of voice
movement and presence
Your pet perceives these shifts immediately.
You don’t have to feel stressed for your nervous system to be carrying stress.
Why You Might Not Notice Your Own Stress
Many people function well while stressed.
They work, parent, organise, show up — and assume they’re fine.
But the body can remain in a heightened or guarded state long after the original pressure has passed. Over time, this becomes familiar and invisible.
Animals don’t habituate in the same way. They notice the baseline you’ve learned to live with.
How This Can Show Up in Pets
Common signs include:
increased vigilance or restlessness
following you more closely
withdrawal or hiding
changes in sleep or appetite
heightened reactivity to noise or visitors
These behaviours aren’t a judgement.They’re feedback.
Your pet is responding to the environment as it feels, not as it looks.
This Isn’t About Blame — It’s About Awareness
Nothing is “wrong” with you or your animal.
This isn’t about managing your emotions perfectly or becoming calm all the time.
It’s about understanding that regulation travels through relationship.
When your nervous system softens, your pet often does too — without training, correction, or effort.
If your pet reacts when you’re stressed, it doesn’t mean you’re failing them.
It means they’re attuned.
And sometimes, they’re simply showing us what our body has been holding quietly all along.
With warmth and possibility,
Fabienne ♡
